On April 11, Thompson, 64, let the American people in on a secret via Fox News and ABC Radio. He announced that he has cancer and has been living with the disease for two years now. Specifically, Thompson is in remission after battling lymphoma, and he has chosen to announce this information in order to help him decide whether or not to pursue the nomination. He wants to see how the public will react.
"I have had no illness from it, or even any symptoms. My life expectancy should not be affect," Thompson said in a statement to The New York Times.
Dr. Bruce D. Cheson, one of Thompson's doctors, said recently in an interview with The New York Times, "There is no reason he shouldn't do whatever he wants, even if it involves running for president of the United States."
Cheson first saw Thompson at the beginning of April in 2005. At that time, Thompson had already discovered the lump under his jaw which turned out to be a marginal zone lymphoma. Soon after, Cheson put Thompson on Rituxan, a drug that sent Thompson's cancer into remission.
Other presidential candidates that have recently made announcements about having cancer are Rudolph Giuliani and John McCain. In addition, John Edwards recently disclosed that his wife's cancer has returned.
While the nation waits to see if Thompson will indeed pursue the nomination, it seems that his popularity in the polls in on the rise. He is currently one of the top people favored for the Republican nomination.
