Viewers only need to type in a name and watch as a profile, rating, and other helpful information pops up on the screen. "Lawyer profiles contain helpful information including a lawyer's experience, areas of practice, disciplinary history, and ratings from clients," says Avvo's website. "Profile data comes from many sources, including state courts and bar associations, lawyer websites, and information provided by lawyers."

Mark Britton, who was once the top lawyer at Expedia.com, decided to create Avvo Inc. after being bombarded by questions from family and friends about finding the right lawyer. He teamed up with Paul Bloom, a veteran of Microsoft's Consumer Division, and in a little over a year, Avvo Inc. was formed.
