Kennedy not only reminded lawyers to "constantly re-examine their conduct to be sure they exemplify principles of justice and fairness and advocate for the rule of law around the world," he also insisted that lawyers continuously ask themselves, "Why am I doing this? What inner voice is telling me to decide the case this way?"
To do this is, after all, "fidelity to your oath," he continued.
But the job of a lawyer goes far beyond the courts. American lawyers, Kennedy insists, must "seek to spread legal structures and principles around the world...There is hurt to assuage...There is injustice to be confronted."
