According to an article on
www.law.com, "They will wrestle with the esoteric law of the NFL—which has many definitions for the word 'bonus'—to find out how much of the $37 million the Falcons paid to their wayward quarterback the team can recover."
"The
Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Aug. 26 reported that a person with knowledge of the team's plans had said the team would try and recoup $22 million; ESPN.com later put the number at $20 million," continues the article.
The question is, should the Atlanta Falcons keep Vick—who pleaded guilty to charges related to dogfighting—on the team "in order to make their case that he's forfeited his bonus money?"
Falcons President and General Manager Rich McKay told a press conference that "the recovery of bonus money is important to the organization because any money recovered would be credited against the team's salary cap, the NFL's upper limit on how much teams can spend on players."
"'Cutting him may feel better today emotionally for us and many of our fans," said Falcons owner Arthur Blank, "but it is not in the long-term best interest of our franchise.'"
