The companies involved include H&R Block and Intuit. Both companies, "part of a cartel known as the Free File Alliance, LLC," along with others may have caused damages into the billions.
"This amounts to a tax on e-filing tax returns. Hardworking taxpayers deserve better," said Thomas More Marrone, a partner at Feldman Shepherd. "This is government outsourcing at its worst."
The complaint was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and alleges that the cartel members, instead of setting "fair and uniform" fees for e-filing, set their fees "based solely on profit."
"The name 'Free File Alliance' is clearly misleading," Marrone continued. "E-filing has become an enormous profit center for cartel members."
"The class action seeks a full refund of all fees paid for e-filing," says the press release.
