What does this mean from a legal point of view? Well, there has been an embargo on trade from the United States with Cuba for many years now. Many companies are salivating at the thought of a new marketplace opening up, and there should be some nice
legal opportunities as well. The immigration fields, already busy, will become even more so, as families separated by the U.S.-Cuban animosity will try to reunite.
In addition, there will undoubtedly be new landmines and traps for businesses trying to grab a piece of the Cuban pie. That's tailor-made for international lawyers and general counsel. Agriculture,
family law…opportunities will abound if the embargo gets lifted.
However, that may not be the case anytime soon; Castro's brother is taking the reins. So for the short term the embargo is likely to remain in effect.
Which is a pity because of what are perhaps the most widely looked for benefits to Cuba opening up: all those cigars that would be legal and the CLE conferences that could take place on some of Cuba's many beaches.
