But this had to have been an unusual day on the job. This past Monday, March 23, 2008, Joshua Beadle talked Judge Coffee into sentencing him to 700 days in jail for contempt.
Beadle threatened to kill the judge and apparently went off so badly that Judge Coffee said he'd hold Beadle in contempt for 10 days for each word Beadle spoke. He stopped counting at 70 words, sentencing Beadle to 700 days in jail, which is slightly under two years.
Now, this may appear to be outrageous, but the story gets better. How many judges have had, on the job, their prisoner in a shackled outfit and a spit mask? Yes, a spit mask. Apparently back in January of this year, Beadle tried to spit on Judge Coffee but missed and hit the clerk's computer. So the bailiffs weren't taking any chances. Beadle apologized to the clerk and said his target was the judge. I'm sure that made her feel better.
Beadle was in court on burglary and rape charges.
Ah, the hazards of
being a judge on the job. On the other hand, it beats document review.
