More specifically, smaller firms appear to be experiencing more job cuts than larger firms.
However, some remain optimistic about Baltimore's downsizing. Michael J. Baader, the managing partner of Venable, LLP, in Baltimore, said, "The backdrop of the economy, we haven't felt it yet in the middle market, and frankly, I don't expect that we're going to feel it."
And Baltimore hiring partner for DLA Piper US, LLP, Hugh J. Marbury said, "I think that, generally speaking, firms in Baltimore are more conservative in their growth and maybe have a longer-term vision."
Nonetheless, he added, "It's not to say it can't happen [here]."
One suggestion for law firms that want to keep from going under: be careful about whom you elevate to partnership.
"If you're going to downsize a law firm," said Marbury, "you get more bang for your buck by getting rid of a partner because they cost more money."
