Such a case is the one Bradley Fowler has filed against publisher Zondervan, which is a Christian publisher that publishes editions of the Bible. Fowler is homosexual and has taken offense at Zondervan's translation of 1 Corinthians 6:9, in the New Testament, which classifies homosexuals as being sinners who won't inherit the kingdom of God.
Fowler is suing for $60 million for the last 20 years he has, apparently, been suffering emotional trauma over the issue. He is asking for an apology as well as the dough.
Fowler argues that Zondervan doesn't use the word "homosexuals" in Bibles printed before and after the 1980s, though apparently this is incorrect. Indeed, other Bible publishers also use the term, or terms that are similar, such as "sodomite" or "abusers of themselves with men." Fowler argues that any reference to homosexuality is a mistranslation and a change.
Assuming that Fowler is correct and it is a mistranslation, there is no word on whether the term "fornicator," which is also in that verse as being condemned, applies to him as well. Nor is there word on whether Fowler believes that adulterers, thieves, or alcoholics, lumped into the same category as homosexuals and fornicators, are also suffering "emotional distress and mental instability" from being mentioned in the same passage.
If Fowler wins this case, I suppose Bible publishers will go out of business when everyone who gets drunk and parties sues them for emotional distress. Or maybe Fowler can sue God, who the publisher would argue is the original author. Good luck with that! I hear service of process is rather tough.
