Georgia itself is a former republic of the Soviet Union. Russia responded to the Georgian move with a full-fledged invasion of Georgia that most Western nations have called a naked power and land grab.
Be that as it may, now that the firing appears to be dying down, it's time for the lawyers to take over. And take over they have! While tank battles are messy, at least they are conclusive. Unfortunately, the new legal war will probably not be ended quite so easily.
Georgia has sued Russia in the International Court of Justice, which is located in The Hague, Netherlands. Georgia is asking the ICJ to order Russia to remove all its troops from Georgian soil, including South Ossetia. Georgia is further asking that the ICJ order Russia to let hundreds of thousands of refugees from Georgia return to their homes (Russian forces have occupied Georgian cities for several days now) and, of course, to cough up some dough.
Russia, for its part, has threatened Georgia's president Mikhail Saakashvili with prosecution in Russia for "crimes against Russia's interests." It will be interesting to see how that flies, considering that if everyone who acts against Russia's interests is now prosecutable in Russia, one could foresee just about everyone in the world being guilty.
Somehow, charging a foreign leader of a country you invade with the crime of resisting your invasion seems like a silly endeavor.
In any case, the gears of justice are now starting to turn! Think anyone will care, though, what the ICJ concludes five years from now or whenever the case is over? More to the point, if the ICJ orders Russia to pay, who believes Russia actually will?
