On Monday, the North Dakota Senate voted 35-10 to approve Bill SB2070 and now it must go to the state House. Arkansas claims it was the first state to ban smoking in cars carrying minors, while Maine, Louisiana and California have already passed similar laws. More states are expected to follow suit. The purpose of the law is to protect those children from secondhand smoke, who don't have a choice when they are traveling with other passengers who smoke in the car.
The province of Ontario, Canada, officially banned smoking in cars with children. The new law took effect on January 22, 2009, ironically the same day as Weedless Wednesday. If you are caught smoking in your car with kids onboard, the charge carries a $250 fine. Nova Scotia was the first Canadian province to impose the smoking ban and British Columbia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island are expected to follow suit.
