The buyout will appeal to the firm's eligible 60 full-time support staff. Eligible workers are determined by the number of years the individual has been with the firm. Employees were told of the buyout program on Monday and any takers must accept the offer by May 15th.

According to Piwowarczyk, there are many reasons that it is necessary for the firm to trim their workforce, citing the deflating economy, and advances in technology.

Piwowarczyk points out that “Periodically, like every good business, you have to take a look at where you are. The numbers of attorneys are increasing because of a variety of technologies and the way you practice, but there are fewer letters and more e-mails. We’ve got more support staff personnel than we need to effectively and efficiently do business.''

Jaeckle Fleischmann has seen recent changes lately, including a 19% drop in the number of attorneys, and the closure of the firm's Rochester office on January 30th after several intellectual property attorneys left Jaeckle Fleischmann to join another firm in Rochester.

Piwowarczyk would not speculate on what will happen if none of the support workers are willing to accept the buyout and concludes, ''We’ll evaluate at that time. Obviously, some decisions will have to be made, but there’s no sense in making those decisions until we have to.''
