According to a news release, Gary Geddie, Ogletree's Deakins' Managing shareholder remarked, ''we're excited to continue our accelerated national expansion by bringing our services into New Orleans. The city's business community is still rebuilding after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.[It is also dealing with the deep recession and must] now deal with the significant new and forthcoming workplace laws and regulations. With Ogletree Deakins' growing national presence, we believe we can make a beneficial contribution to the rebuilding of the business community in New Orleans and the entire Gulf region.''
On the flip side, the Chicago law firm of
Baker & Mckenzie has announced that in order to cut costs, junior lawyers with the firm will see a reduction in pay. The firm has already experienced lay-offs and has delayed the start dates of new lawyers that were expected to join the firm. Earlier this month, Baker & Mackenzie laid off 38 lawyers and 86 paralegals and support staff. Baker & Mckenzie is one of the largest law firms in the world and employs about 3600 employees around the globe.
The firm issued a statement regarding their recent decision to reduce the salaries of their junior lawyers and explains, ''Similar to other law firms, we have considered and have been using a range of options to reduce costs across the firm. In select instances, we have reduced some salaries to preserve jobs. We are striving to be flexible and to retain as much of our talent as possible with the knowledge that the economy will inevitably brighten.'' It was not revealed how many junior lawyers will see a cut in pay or how much that cut will be.
