This time around, the World Cup is being played in South Africa, a country that has shown strong growth in the legal sector over the last ten years. It’s estimated to bring in a whopping .5% rise to the country’s GDP this year. According to The Guardian, legal work related to the World Cup is likely to be concentrated in four areas. Topping the list is IP work. The firm representing the World Cup organizing committee is ENS, whose web page is currently adorned with the black and white pentagonal patched ball we in the states call a soccer ball. They will handle issues related to licensing the various trademarks associated with the World Cup.
Issues revolving around competition and unfair business practices are also likely to pop up, as airlines are reportedly already charging sky high fees for travel to the region and other businesses may engage in price gouging. Increases in tourism and crowded conditions are expected to lead to an increase in criminal complaints, providing extra work for local criminal defense firms. And local businesses affected by ''exclusion zones'' in and around the various World Cup venues will have questions and complaints for local firms to handle as well.
