The Children's Aid Society has been in its current location for more than a century, though it voted this week to move its efforts to another area, perhaps the South Bronx. Richard Buery, who is the CEO and president for the agency said, ''Every choice to serve children in one neighborhood is a choice not to serve those in another...and our mission requires us to make those choices in favor of children and communities with more limited resources''. That certainly sounds reasonable and the last thing the charity expected was backlash from its wealthy neighbors.
Now, a lawsuit has been filed and according to Luke McGrath, the lawyer who represents at least one parent, says the charity is now discriminating against ''affluent Village residents''. He claims a promise was broken not to ''discriminate based on socio-economic status'' and says that by closing the school and charity, the community will change. McGrath says compromises were offered, including asking the organization to ensure another similar group would move into the building. The Children's Aid Society declined that request for obvious reasons. Further, it said it would not decline an offer to buy the building because it came from anyone who wouldn't pursue a community-based effort. It did, however, agree to keep the nursery school open for those students already enrolled, at least for the short term.
For now, there are just a few parents and other neighbors participating in the lawsuit, though it's been suggested others could join the cause in the near future.
