The issue at hand for blind law school applicants was that they had to rely on, and call customer service during working hours in order to complete the online application forms. The Law School Admission Council will alter the website for blind users so that they may complete the applications, independently, in whatever time frame they choose. Changes to the website will be in place by September, which corresponds with the next cycle of law school admissions.
Council President Daniel Bernstine was quoted as saying: ''We don't see this as an admission of liability. Rather, we see it as an opportunity to make our Web site more accessible to blind students. When we got to a point where we could make the Web site 100% accessible, that's something we wanted to do."
National Federation of the Blind president Marc Maurer was quoted as saying in a written statement: ''Access to Web sites is critical to the full and equal participation of blind people in all aspects of modern life. In this instance, access is especially critical, since without it blind people experience significant barriers to entering the legal profession.''
According to information at the organization’s website, the National Federation of the Blind has over 50,000 members, and it ''is the largest and most influential membership organization of blind people in the United States''. It seeks to ''improve blind people’s lives through advocacy, education, research, technology, and programs encouraging independence and self-confidence''.
