Simpson Thatcher & Bartlett, LLP is overseeing the historic Microsoft-Skype deal and at the helm is Charles ''Casey'' Cogut, a senior corporate partner who specializes in mergers and acquisitions and private equity deals. Handling private ''complex multi-jurisdictional acquisitions'', it was natural that he would step up to the plate.
With the firm since 1973, Cogut became partner in 1980 and for a brief time in the early 1990s, he served as Senior Resident Partner at the firm's London location. If he sounds like an incredibly important person, he is. Named one of the ten ''Most Highly Regarded Individuals'' in 2010 by the International Who's Who of Corporate Governance Lawyers, Cogut is only doing what comes natural for him.
This isn't the only award in this stellar career. Cogut was named Senior Statesman in the Corporate Mergers & Acquisitions and Private Equity in Chambers' 2011 ''Guide to the world's Leading Lawyers for Business''. He was also named one of the ''Best of the Best'' M&A lawyers in Euromoney's 2011 Expert Guides as well as Deal Maker of the Year by ''American Lawyer'' for two years.
With his JD earned in 1973 from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and after graduating summa cum laude in 1969 from Lehigh University, Cogut raised the bar for lawyers around the world. It's all culminated into what's sure to be the highlight of his career: the Microsoft buyout of Skype. This merger immediately sent stocks up at the opening bell on May 10 and solidified what many hoped was a further consolidation of technology companies. The deal is worth $8.5 billion.
While the deal still must gain regulatory approvals, Cogut said he and his team are confident that the deal will sail through.
This team is also negotiating the new governing body, already announcing that former Cisco executive Tony Bates will serve in the role of president of this new division. As Microsoft's counsel, Cogut is working alongside Alan Klein and Greg Grogran, both of Simpson, Thatcher and Bartlett, LLP.
