Rosenbloom was quoted as saying: ''After an extensive search, we selected the Greater Des Moines Partnership as the client for the class because of its prominence in the region, plus its leaders were the most enthusiastic about the course and working with students.''
The students analyzed the issues of sustainable procurement, sustainable building and design of commercial buildings, reduction of run-off from agricultural land, and protection and expansion of the urban forest in Des Moines. Following their analysis, they wrote a series of reports which they presented to both the Greater Des Moines Partnership and the Des Moines City Council.
Rosenbloom was quoted as saying: ''The students confronted serious issues and did a wonderful job. Mayor Cownie and Council members Christine Hensley, Brian Meyer, as well as City Manager Richard Clark, praised the students and their work on the record. Council member Bob Mahaffey approached me after the meeting to state how pleased he was with the students' work and that Drake had taken an additional interest in the city.''
''The city of Des Moines initiated its green policy in 2007. This is a long process and we can use all the help we can get. The contribution by the Drake University law students is valuable and a strong foundation on which the council can begin to build even more meaningful policies that will help the city reach its goal of creating a 'Sustainable Green Community,'' Mayor Frank Cownie was quoted as saying.
John Crotty, a second-year law student from Marshalltown, Iowa was quoted as saying: ''The most valuable part of the class was getting the opportunity to make a real proposal to important people in the community who could actually make it happen. It was great to be able to say, 'This is what needs to be changed and here is how to do it.''
