On Wednesday, Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, a law firm based in Columbia, South Carolina, announced the recruitment of a group of litigators from Benesch. This team includes four partners, namely Justin Barker, Dawn Beery, Scott McMillin, and Matt Nirider, who will establish a new office for Nelson Mullins in Chicago. McMillin will take on the role of office head in Chicago. Additionally, three more Benesch litigators, namely Ryan Babiuch, Jerome Cook, and Michael Snyder have joined Nelson Mullins' Cleveland office, with Babiuch serving as co-managing partner of the office opened in 2022.
According to McMillin, the product liability practice of the newly hired litigators from Benesch complements Nelson Mullins' existing offerings. He added that with 33 offices spread across 17 states, including California, where many clients face lawsuits, Nelson Mullins could offer local representation to its clients.
Benesch, founded in Cleveland, opened its Chicago office in 2015. Lawyers from Benesch's Chicago office are currently involved in Smartmatic USA Corp's $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News over its coverage of debunked election-rigging claims. However, McMillin clarified that none of the departing lawyers were involved in the case, and a Benesch spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
