After 35 years at their current location, law firm Crowell & Moring is set to move its headquarters in downtown Washington, D.C., to a new, more efficient office space. The firm has secured a lease as the anchor tenant at 600 Fifth St., a redeveloped building by Rockefeller Group and Stonebridge. With its 675 lawyers and staff, Crowell will downsize from over 391,000 square feet to a new space spanning 198,877 square feet. The move is anticipated to take place by July 2026, coinciding with the expiration of the firm's current lease.
Despite the litigation, Crowell's move to a new office space is viewed as a significant development in the legal industry. The lease is one of the largest signed by a law firm in the past year and a half. Other firms, such as Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft and Katten Muchin Rosenman, have also downsized their headquarters while signing over 200,000 square feet of leases.
The shifting landscape of the legal sector in response to the pandemic has led to a reevaluation of office space needs. Law firms are prioritizing flexibility and remote work options for lawyers. Crowell's Chair of the Management Board, Philip Inglima, highlights that the new office will be smaller in square footage but will offer enhanced efficiency, ample natural light, state-of-the-art meeting spaces, and cutting-edge technology.
As the legal industry adapts to changing work dynamics, Crowell's relocation represents a strategic move to optimize resources and embrace a more agile approach to office utilization.
