Hu has practiced law for more than 35 years, primarily in family and general civil litigation. He attended law school at the University of Alberta, worked for Special Prosecutions as a summer student and then articled to the late Fraser Goddard at Parlee Irving and then under Keith Ritter, (recently retired from the Court of Appeal) and George Akers. In 1994 he began his own legal practice with friends from law school and, in 2004, began a solo practice from a heritage building in Strathcona, now in association with three other lawyers. Hu brings to the table extensive trial experience including appellate work and before administrative tribunals.
Hu has been a member of the Civil Trial Lawyers’ Association and Canadian Bar Association for more than a quarter century and has written for the Barrister publication and materials for the CBA family law section.
Other experiences include a term as national president of Easter Seals and board member of various provincial and municipal organizations. He has served as a judge for the Jessup International Moot Court competition and enjoyed coaching basketball for many years, including, along with a dear friend, Chad Bowie, provincial championship winning teams and at Gonzaga University summer camps.
Hu is the father of three sons and three grandsons (nothing but Y chromosomes apparently); this makes him a “Y’s guy”. An avid hiker, ask him about ascents of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt Acatonango and hikes such as Tiger’s Nest (Paro Taktsang) monastery in Bhutan, the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu and the Ciudad Perdid in Colombia. He has cycled from Vancouver to Jasper and from the Going to the Sun highway to Lake Louise to raise funds for a mental health foundation here in Alberta (CASA) and up Stelvio, Tourmalet and Mt Ventoux as well as in such countries as Uzbekistan, Namibia and Myanmar.
